Voronoi Mosaic

Voronoi Mosaic

The design of this mosaic tiling is a direct projection of a Voronoi diagram mapping the Centro district's abandoned and underutilized properties, and is installed within the very heart of that same neglected area. The apartment itself, rehabilitated from a state of utter decay after being abandoned for over 30 years, now houses a map of the disrepair and extending beyond the renewed walls.

While the apartment is now functional and revitalized (see APTO1212), it remains under the ownership of a wealthy individual whose negligence contributed to the area’s decline. The bathroom wall, visually depicting the surrounding abandonment, is part of a space still controlled by the forces responsible for the district’s decline. The mosaic serves as a reminder that, despite any personal effort to renew the space, it remains part of a broader system of neglect by a ownership class.

The owner will, of course, never know (nor will any future resident) that the stunning bathroom wall literally maps the decaying environment his neglect has perpetuated over decades. Yet the fact of the design’s origin remains and will accompany the rehabilitated space into a future that I hope will be one of renewal for the area.
